Agent Types:

Spy: Spies are the eyes and ears of your empire. They observes enemy settlements

Priest: Priests keep your population in order. They increase your cities faith. When you send them to an enemy settlement they decrease faith and may cause a revolt if they are not detected.

Assassin: Assassins sabotage enemy buildings. They are useful when the enemy is heavily defended with soldiers. You can destroy enemy mines and farms without a battle.

Missions:

When you send an agent to an enemy settlement, there are many factors that affect the agent’s success(agent XP, your espionage, enemy espionage, enemy outpost, enemy faith ) . If your agent is successful Xp will increase depending on the missions difficulty. If your agent is detected he will be killed and the enemy will know who sends the agent. So pay attention not to send your agents to strong players.

Training:

When you first recruit an agent xp will be too low to complete a mission successfully so the best way to have talented agents is training. As agent’s level increases training costs more but the xp gained from training will increase too.
